Visitors and residents both enjoy the peaceful suburban setting and the multitude of parks and outdoor public spaces that have become the hallmark of Sunnyvale's city planning. With an enormous variety of culinary choices, a comprehensive hospitality industry, and easy access to San Francisco, San Jose, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and the Pacific Ocean, Sunnyvale offers the perfect mix of a picturesque smaller city and proximity to an array of activities and entertainment choices.

The local economy began to shift from fruit to technology in the 1930's, with a naval airfield (Moffett Field), and continued to change throughout the course of World War II with many local companies aiding in the war effort and refocusing their efforts. This change toward a technology-focused local economy has continued to the present day and created the world famous Silicon Valley area in which most of the software and technology leaders are headquartered. Sunnyvale is home to Yahoo, Lockheed Martin, Palm, Inc., Juniper Networks, AMD, NetApp, Spansion, Simco Electronics, Mirapoint, AppliedMicro, Maxim Integrated Products, Ariba and many more who help to make the city what it is today.

Residents in Sunnyvale are proud to have access to highly regarded and nationally recognized schools in their public school system. Also nearby are many distinguished Universities and higher education opportunities such as Stanford University, Santa Clara University, UC Santa Cruz, San Jose State University, the Art Institute of California Sunnyvale, De Anza College, Cogswell College, Mission College, and many more within a short drive.

Sunnyvale is one of the few U.S. cities to have a single unified Department of Public Safety, where all personnel are trained as firefighters, police officers, and EMTs, so they can respond to an emergency in any of the three roles.

Sunnyvale is home to an impressive variety of local shopping and dining options boasting 49 separate neighborhood and regional shopping centers. Picturesque downtown Sunnyvale, including historic Murphy Avenue, was recently completely remodeled and is now the envy of the South Bay. The perfect area to stroll around, shop, enjoy a bite and a drink, or watch one of the many outdoor concert and musical events, the new downtown Sunnyvale is an attraction unto itself.
