The City of Sunnyvale has only one redevelopment project, the 184-acre Central Core Revelopment Project Area. The goal of the project is to rebuild Downtown Sunnyvale as a traditional downtown, a vibrant pedestrian-friendly central place for shopping, working, living and entertainment. The current focus is on the large block bounded by Mathilda, Washington, Sunnyvale and Iowa Avenues, commonly known as the Town Center Mall.
Downtown Construction Updates
Sunnyvale Town Center Construction of tenant improvements and surrounding site improvements for the Nokia office building at Washington and Mathilda are progressing preparing for Nokia staff to move in early December. The exterior of the commercial, residential and office buildings is continuing and is scheduled to be complete in late November.
Public street improvements along Mathilda south of McKinley Avenue have been completed, so the northbound lanes of Mathilda are ready to re-open when office building work is completed in early December. Sidewalks along McKinley Avenue and Taaffe Avenue are being completed this month.
Work on the East of Macy’s public parking lot is nearing completion. Work done by the Receiver includes rehabilitation of landscaping, a new grass open space area, seal coating and expanding the public parking lot, and construction of a connector road from the parking lot to the McKinley-Murphy intersection. Work is to be completed before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Mathilda Bridge Reconstruction
The purpose of the Downtown Mathilda Bridge Project is to: a) Provide standard lane, shoulder widths, and ramps; b) Improve curbs and sidewalks to meet ADA requirements; and c) Eliminate the existing bridge’s “Functional Obsolete” rating.
The project will provide the following functional improvements: Off Ramp access to East and West bound Evelyn Avenue; Charles Avenue Cul-de-Sac, new pedestrian ramps, new traffic signals at California and Mathilda and SB off ramp and Evelyn.
Ongoing operations include demolition of the existing Evelyn off-ramp; forming and construction of new foundations and columns and pile driving of the final two locations. The project is tentatively scheduled to be completed by January 2012, weather permitting.
