SAN JOSE (BCN)

A San Jose-based community organization is reaching out to the public in hopes of helping an estimated 4,000 Bay Area families with Thanksgiving dinner.

Sacred Heart Community Service currently has about 1,000 turkeys stored, but officials said the organization is expecting to need another 3,000 turkeys to meet the need for Thanksgiving food boxes that will be given out to families in need next week.

Sacred Heart Community Service spokeswoman Anna Sutton said this is the 50th year the organization has done a Thanksgiving food program.

She said she expects the organization to reach its goal by next week, but that is only if people donate.

"We can't do this without our community," Sutton said.

She said people wishing to donate can visit www.sacredheartcs.org/holidays or bring food to the center at 1381 S. First St. today and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Families in need previously scheduled appointments to reserve the dinners, which will be available for pickup beginning next week.

Sutton said the organization this year is also allowing families that didn't reregister for dinners to still pick one up from the center.

"Unfortunately, we have a lot of need in the community," she said. "We want people to know these families are just like your family."
