Founded in 1968 to create a community-based children’s theater in San Jose, CA, Children’s Musical Theater (CMT) is now one of the nation’s largest youth musical theater and training program of its kind. The mission of CMT is to train and educate today’s youth through musical theater to set and achieve high artistic and personal goals, and to inspire them to become exemplary artists, patrons and citizens of tomorrow.
Our programs provide accessible musical theater training for children of all ages and abilities, and we embrace racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity in our staff, participants, and audiences. We pride ourselves on instilling a love and sense of joy for the arts in children that will last a lifetime.
CMT is guided by some key principles, which include casting all that audition, setting and achieving the highest artistic standards, embracing diversity in our performers, audiences and staff, and providing a positive, family-friendly nurturing community.
At CMT, being a performer in one of our productions includes training in performance arts, but also includes learning about the history, culture, context and artistic significance of the show. Educational experts have reported that CMT programs contribute to success in and out of school, and support important developmental assets in youth performers.
CMT is proud to have served the community of San Jose for 40 years, during which we have reached out to over 60,000 children. Recently, CMT was presented with its fifth Access to Artistic Excellence grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and was the first non-professional theater company in the nation, (youth or adult) to be chosen to produce Miss Saigon and Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida. CMT was also granted the exclusive rights to produce the West Coast Premiere of Radio City Entertainment’s musical, A Christmas Carol.
CMT strives to foster a lifelong love of the theater in our participants, our audiences, and community.
