About Sunnyvale
Residents and visitors alike praise Sunnyvale for its low crime rate, excellent schools, well-managed park system, and picturesque suburban environment. The quality of life in Sunnyvale is nationally renowned, and as a result, in 2005 the city received the designation of the 18th Safest City in the United States, according to research and publishing company Morgan Quitno Press.
Many of Sunnyvale's residents are employed in the high-tech sector. Lockheed-Martin Corporation is one of the largest employers in the area, as are Advanced Micro Devices, a manufacturer of microprocessors; Juniper Networks, Inc., which makes and sells Internet Protocol routers; and Yahoo, Inc., one of the world's largest search engines.
Other employers in nearby cities include Applied Materials in Santa Clara, a producer of chip fabrication technology; and Electronic Arts and Google, Inc., in Mountain View. The United States Air Force is also a large employer in the area, with Onizuka Air Force Base still in operation (the only one in the San Francisco Bay area). The Blue Cube, Onizuka AFB's main building, is a local landmark in Sunnyvale.
