Teams of people joined by Special Olympics athletes will be putting their muscles to the test during a special display of brute strength and teamwork at the Special Olympics Northern California annual Power Pull event at California’s Great America on July 27.

From 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., 15-person teams will each be joined by one Special Olympics athlete and together will pull a Central Concrete truck weighing 38,000 pounds and a Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety fire truck weighing 66,000 pounds.

The goal: to be the fastest team to pull the trucks a total of 20 feet.

Each team pays a registration fee, with all proceeds benefiting the athletes of Special Olympics Northern California.

Registration is $1,500 per team. Teams can raise the funds collectively or can simply pay the registration fee. Registration includes lunch, free same-day admittance to Great America and a swag towel for each team member.

New this year is the Light Weight Division. Participants ages 10-17 form a 10-person team and compete to be the fastest to pull a 4,000-pound sports car 10 feet. Registration is $500.

Great America discount tickets and lunch tickets for families of the participants can be purchased online. Great America tickets are $30 each, and guest lunch tickets are $15 each. Lunch includes hamburgers, vegetarian Western-style beans, garden salad, soda and ice cream. Tickets can be picked up from the will call booth at the park.
