NetApp awards $100K cancer research grant

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, was named the recipient of the NetApp Employee St. Baldrick’s Research Grant, which consists of $100,000 to support research focused on childhood leukemias.

Dr. Daniel Wechsler, a physician-scientist and division chief of pediatric hematology-oncology at Duke Children’s Hospital and Health Center at Duke University, was given the grant to continue his studies of a type of high-risk leukemia that affects both children and adults.

Sunnyvale-based NetApp and the company’s employees have raised more than $5.8 million since 2007 for life-saving research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

HSSV opens new adoption center

Humane Society Silicon Valley announced that it has opened a third Neighborhood Adoption Center at PetSmart in Mountain View. The new adoption center was made possible by a $1 million challenge match from the Coyote Foundation, which will also be used to make Humane Society Silicon Valley’s existing Neighborhood Adoption Centers more operationally sustainable.

In the past five years, Humane Society Silicon Valley has grown adoptions by 40 percent by opening its first two Neighborhood Adoption Centers inside Petco stores in Sunnyvale and West San Jose. Adoptions at Humane Society Silicon Valley’s main campus in Milpitas have also increased in that time period.

The new location is at 2440 E. Charleston Road in Mountain View.
