Sunnyvale’s SummerWinds Nursery location will officially be closing in mid-September, the company announced in July.
The property owner sold the site to a hotel developer, as the lease was due to expire, according to the nursery.
SummerWinds still has six other locations in the Peninsula and South Bay, including one in Santa Clara that’s less than two miles away at 2931 El Camino Real. There are also locations in Mountain View and Cupertino.
“We regret having to close our Sunnyvale store,” Frank Benzing, president and CEO of SummerWinds, said in a press release. “We appreciate the tremendous support from the community over the years, and the wonderful service our associates have provided. We look forward to serving our Sunnyvale customers at our other locations, and many of our valued associates will transfer to other SummerWinds stores.”
The Sunnyvale store at 861 E. El Camino Real will continue to operate its regular hours from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. until it closes in mid-September. There is an ongoing store-wide clearance sale on all in-stock items.
The nursery is known for its edibles, perennials, bedding plants, pottery, houseplants, trees, shrubs and organic fertilizers.
A hospitality firm is hoping to plant a 163-room hotel where the nursery now stands.
Plotted right between Golfland USA and a strip mall, the location was purchased through a partnership that includes local hotel developers Kelly Heil, Bob Longinetti and Dewey Weaver.
The group paid about $5 million for the 1.56-acre site.
Heil said the group has submitted a preliminary application to the city to develop the site, but he hasn’t yet been given final approval for what hotel brand the site would have.
Heil said he and Longinetti are also the developers behind the Hilton Garden Inn at 10741 N. Wolfe Road in Cupertino, which similarly has about 163 rooms.
Gardeners can find other local SummerWinds nurseries in Mountain View at 805 Yuba Drive and in Cupertino at 1491 S. De Anza Blvd. Other nearby locations also include Palo Alto at 725 San Antonio Road and in Campbell at 2460 S. Winchester Blvd.
There is a San Jose location at 4606 Almaden Expressway and the company also owns Green Thumb Nursery in Los Gatos at 15796 Winchester Blvd.
