Iyad Naffa, a 51-year-old San Jose resident, has been identified as the man who died after flipping his car into the pond at Sunnyvale Community Center pond last week.

Police and fire fighters responded to a flipped car in the decorative community pond at 550 E. Remington Drive around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17.

Naffa was successfully extracted from the car, though unconscious, and was taken to Valley Medical Center. Police said he was wearing his seat belt. According to family members, Naffa was taken off life support sometime last week.

It is unclear whether the victim drowned or succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash. Police said the car was likely traveling at a high rate of speed when it ran off the road and flipped into the pond. The car may have flipped more than once. A lamp post and landscaping was damaged from the crash.

It is still unknown if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident. Police said that toxicology reports are still pending.
