Golf tourney

The first Heroes and Helpers Golf Tournament, a benefit for the Shop With a Cop Foundation of Silicon Valley, will be held on Nov. 3 at Los Lagos Golf Course, 2995 Tuers Road in San Jose. The cost is $360 for a foursome or $95 per player, and the scramble tournament begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Sakkas, Moore

Janaye Sakkas of Monta Vista and Melina Moore of Los Gatos are two of just five girls from California to be selected to participate in the USA Field Hockey Futures Elite Academy. The academies are part of the Olympic Development program and “exist to provide additional training and competition opportunities for these athletes distinguished with the potential to one day represent Team USA,” according to a Team USA Field Hockey press release.

Turkey Trot

The 10th annual Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot will be held on Nov. 27, Thanksgiving Day, in downtown San Jose. Participants can compete in the 5K, 10K or 10K Wheelchair events. For more information or to register, visit svturkeytrot.com.

Youth rugby

The Silicon Valley Rugby Football Club is holding registration for the winter season for boys and girls ages 6-18 and for a men’s club team. Practices will begin in late November and will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays at Calabazas Park in San Jose. Club dues range between $180 and $250.
