Cuban ballet in South Bay

Silicon Valley Ballet, formerly Ballet San Jose, will stage “Giselle” Oct. 16-18 as the first production under its new name.

Choreographed by Cuban choreographer and dancer Alicia Alonso, the ballet about a young peasant girl who dies of a broken heart and then is summoned from the grave comes on the heels of the historic reopening of relations between the United States and Cuba after more than 50 years.

Alonso first danced the title role in 1945 in Havana and has adapted the choreography of the classic ballet. Now she has handpicked Jose Manuel Carreño, Silicon Valley Ballet’s artistic director, to dance in select performances.

“Giselle” plays at San Jose Center for the Performing Arts 255 Almaden Blvd. Tickets will be on sale at balletsj.org or 408.288.2800.

Puccini opera opens season

Opera San Jose kicks off its season with six performances of Puccini’s “Tosca,” Sept. 12-29.

Spoiled starlet Floria Tosca finds herself stalked by a dangerous man, but her troubles don’t end when her violent pursuer dies.

Olga Chernisheva, a Russian soprano who has performed in her native country and Sweden, makes her company debut for the show’s first four performances in the title role. Guest soprano Elizabeth Baldwin will take on the role for the last two shows. She returns to the Opera San Jose stage after a performance as the First Lady in “The Magic Flute” last season.

Tosca will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. The production will be conducted by Joseph Marcheso and directed by Brad Dalton.

“Tosca” plays at the California Theatre, 345 S. First St., San Jose. Tickets are $50-$151 at operasj.org and by phone at 408.437.4450.

‘Orphan Train’ headed to SJ

“Homeward Bound, An Orphan Train Journey” makes a stop at San Jose’s Tabard Theatre from Sept. 18 to Oct. 11.

The musical follows the true-to-life journey of six young girls from the streets of New York to San Jose in 1910.

Accompanied by historical photographs, the show depicts a lesser-known period in history when more than 250,000 homeless and orphaned children from large East Coast cities were away to be placed in homes between 1854 and 1929.

The show is written and directed by Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Tabard’s artistic director.

Performances are at the Theatre on San Pedro Square, 29 N. San Pedro St. Tickets are $15-$40 at tabardtheatre.org.
