The fierce field hockey battle continues in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this season–the battle for second place, that is.

Los Gatos is literally sticking it to the competition, outscoring league opponents 61-0 while rolling up a 6-0 record through the first half of the SCVAL season.

In the meantime, three other teams are slapping their sticks together in the race for the runner-up spot.

Saratoga, Monta Vista and Cupertino are each 5-2 after playing the first game of the second round of the league campaign. The Falcons blanked Homestead 3-0, Monta Vista edged Los Altos 3-2 and Cupertino shut out Lynbrook 3-0 in games last Friday.

Erin Norris had a goal and an assist and Hannah Leonard and Christina Crolla each scored goals to pace Saratoga to the win over the Mustangs. Anne Rollinson and Tina Miller also added assists for the Falcons.

Monta Vista had opened the week with a tough 8-0 loss to Los Gatos, but battled back to beat Los Altos 3-2. Janaye Sakkas slapped home two goals and Allegra Ziegler Hunts added a goal in the Matador victory. Mallory Strom had two assists in the win and Nikki Stuart had one.

Jordan Amick and Lauren Rowe each had a goal and an assist to lead the Pioneers to the 3-0 win over Lynbrook. Emily Burke also scored for Cupertino and Solin Piearcy added an assist.

SCVAL standings (as of Oct. 21): Los Gatos 6-0 (9-0), Cupertino 5-2, Monta Vista 5-2, Saratoga 5-2, Los Altos 1-5-1, Homestead 1-6, Lynbrook 0-6-1
