There’s a simple formula for winning–or at least not losing–field hockey games … don’t let the other team score.

The Los Gatos girls seem to be putting that theory to good use this season. So far the Wildcats have played eight games, and they have yet to give up a goal to an opposing team.

The Cats ran their record to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League play with two more shutout wins last week–5-0 over rival Saratoga and 14-0 over Lynbrook. So far, the Wildcats have outscored opponents 53-0 in league play.

The win over Saratoga was the most impressive thus far in league play for Los Gatos. The teams took matching 3-0 SCVAL records into the Wednesday afternoon game at Benny Pierce Field, and they were also both undefeated overall–Gatos 6-0 and Saratoga 5-0.

Monta Vista took a page out of the Los Gatos playbook last week, blanking Lynbrook 2-0 to push its record to 4-1 in league play.

Allegro Ziegler Hunts and Melissa Foster each knocked in first-half goals to put the Matadors up 2-0, then the clubs fought through a scoreless second half.

Janaye Sakkas passed out a couple of assists and Arushi Agarwala added one to contribute to the Monta Vista victory.

The Mats were to face a tough test against Los Gatos earlier this week, and they will be back on their home field on Oct. 17 when they host winless Los Altos at 3:30 p.m. They visit Cupertino on Oct. 22, 3:30 p.m.

With Los Gatos virtually running away from the rest of the field, the race for second place is on with Monta Vista, Saratoga and Cupertino battling for the runner-up spot.

Saratoga beat Monta Vista 3-2 in the first round of league play, and the Matadors pounded the Pioneers 6-1.

SCVAL standings (as of Oct. 14): Los Gatos 5-0, Monta Vista 4-1, Saratoga 4-1, Cupertino 3-2, Homestead 0-4-1, Lynbrook 0-4-1, Los Altos 0-5
