Students at Homestead High School collected money and items for Sunnyvale Community Services during the month of November, raising nearly $3,000 and donating more than 18,500 items. The Homestead High canned food drive is an annual event and also a friendly competition between third period classes. Donations were collected Nov. 12-25 and included canned foods, cereals, household items, clothes and toys. Because of the effort, Homestead was listed as a major program contributor on the nonprofit’s website. Liz Williams’ AP English class was identified as the class with the most generous students. Sunnyvale Community Services serves about 7,000 individuals a year. Financial assistance for rent, utilities and medical care as well as help with food, bus passes and gas vouchers are among the things the organization offers local families.
