Did someone say free? That’s right, in addition to providing shelves and shelves of books that are free for the reading, the Sunnyvale Public Library also offers a wealth of programs and classes – sans charge. They don’t always involve books, but run the gamut between game nights, crafting, musical enrichment, and more.

Many of the public outreach efforts at libraries in general are geared towards children, from toddlers looking for some new two-year-old buddies to teenagers seeking homework help. But adults shouldn’t overlook the classes, lectures, and entertainment possibilities at this valuable and often overlooked community resource.

Here are just a few of the ongoing activities to look out for at the Sunnyvale site, and keep in mind that special, one-time events are regularly scheduled, too.

1.      Storytime

What better inspiration for storytime than a place full of books? The Sunnyvale Public Library hosts various, no-charge storytimes throughout the week. Parents with children ages two to three-and-a-half can enjoy Toddler Storytime on Wednesday mornings, when songs and fingerplays will accompany the reading. Got an even younger kid? Your chance to give them a storytime of their own happens at Stories for Ones on Tuesday mornings.

We all know that young children aren’t the only ones who enjoy a good tale. The Sunnyvale Public Library also hosts Time for Tales on Monday mornings, with songs and stories for booklovers of all ages. And one Saturday of the month, the whole family is invited to get out for Family Storytime. Now that’s a lot of stories!

2.      Homework Help

We’ve all been there and know how hard the homework grind can be. Some parents spend hours working side by side with their kids at the end of a long school or workday. Many don’t realize that free homework help for grades 3 through 8 is available just minutes away. Drop the kids off for half an hour or so between 4-6 p.m. on Mondays or Wednesdays while you sift through some personal reading, and when you get home, homework won’t take over family time.

3.      Mastering Chess

You’ve always loved the game, but could use the practice. Maybe you want to master some new strategies or have a budding chess fan at home. The Sunnyvale Public Library regularly hosts free introductions to chess with an international master in the classic game. Check www.sunnyvalelibrary.org for program info.

4.      Musical Enrichment

From Instrumental Petting Zoos hosted by visiting professional musicians to Music for All Ages accompanied by guest entertainers, the library has always got something melodic going on. These events are funded by the city, so you don’t have to reach into your pocket.

5.      Classes, Book Sales, Lectures

Whether you want to learn money management from a Certified Financial Planner, need help understanding the Basics of Facebook, or want learn how to take better photographs, there are various practical courses available at the library each month. Individual feedback and instruction is often given following an interactive presentation. Curious to know what’s next on the calendar?
