The Downtown Mathilda Bridge Project improves the Mathilda Avenue Bridge over Caltrain tracks and Evelyn Avenue.  The goals of the project are to:

  • Widen the bridge and approaches to provide standard lane, shoulder, and ramp widths;
  • Rebuild the off-ramp to a standard configuration, providing access to both East- and West-bound Evelyn.
  •  Improve curbs/barriers, sidewalks and pedestrian ramps to meet all accessibility requirements;
  • Eliminate the existing bridge’s “Functional Obsolete” Caltrans rating;
  • Provide new ornamental street-lighting, aesthetic bridge edge treatment, and new landscaping;
  • Provide more parking at the completion of the project;
  • Re-aligning Evelyn for proper bridge clearance, and closing Charles Avenue with a cul-de-sac;
  • Administering environmental compliance, mitigation monitoring. and grant requirements, including: Buy America, Prevailing Wage, Equal Employment Opportunity, and other obligations.
  • New intersection and traffic signals at Mathilda & California, and Mathilda Off-ramp & Evelyn;
  • Rebuilding San Andreas Court with improved pedestrian access, pavers, and landscaping.
  • Reroute underground utilities to accommodate widened bridge foundations.

Project Cost

The $25.5 million project is largely grant funded with a local agency share as follows.

Traffic

Traffic lanes will be shifted, as necessary to keep two lanes open in each direction over the bridge.  Lane Closures are not permitted during commute hours: Northbound between 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and Southbound between 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Lanes will be reopened to traffic after construction.  Construction-related vehicles are not allowed to park on neighborhood streets.  Other temporary pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle detours will be done as needed for safety.

This Week: 

  • Installation of temporary structural supports (falsework) continues for the northbound and southbound Mathilda bridge widenings.
  • Construction continues on the retaining wall along southbound (west side) Mathilda near the fire station (Wall 3). The concrete forms will be removed from the freshly poured and cured concrete.
  • Construction continues on the replacement pedestrian ramp (east side).  Excavation is scheduled for the pedestrian ramp’s foundations.
  • Demolition of the former Evelyn Avenue off-ramp foundations continues. Within the project limits one-way traffic control is established on Evelyn Avenue during the work day and re-opened each weekday after 3:30 pm and on weekends.

Look Ahead: Demolition of the concrete barrier adjacent to Caltrain Sunnyvale Station has been postponed until late February 2011. 

Good Neighbor Program/Communication: A public meeting is tentatively scheduled for the evening of February 24, at City Hall West Conference Room to review the project’s status.

Environmental Compliance:  The project’s environmental mitigations are reviewed monthly and in compliance. Pile driving was completed on December 15.

Budget:  The project is within budget.

Schedule:  The project is on schedule.

Caltrans:  No issues at this time.

Caltrain / PCJPB: PCJPB Personnel continue to monitor work above or near train tracks. When in the rail road vicinity, project staff is in communication with the railroad flaggers during bridge construction activities.

PG&E:  The lowering of an existing PG&E electrical vault is sequenced to be completed after demolition of the existing Evelyn off ramp.

This Week:

  • Construction of bridge columns (west side) continues for the new Mathilda Avenue off-ramp to Evelyn Avenue.
  • Installation of temporary structural supports (falsework) continues for the northbound and southbound Mathilda bridge widenings.
  • Construction continues on the retaining wall along southbound (west side) Mathilda near the fire station (Wall 3). The concrete forms will be removed.
  • Construction continues on the replacement pedestrian ramp (east side). Excavation is scheduled for the pedestrian ramp’s foundations.

  • In observance of the Christmas holiday, the contractor did not work on the project Thursday and Friday, December 23, and 24.

  • Severe weather is predicted for the majority of the week. Weather conditions will be monitored daily to determine if work can be performed Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

  • Construction continues on the retaining wall along southbound (west side) Mathilda near the fire station.  The concrete forms will be removed, weather permitting.

  • Installation of temporary structural supports (falsework) continues for the northbound and southbound Mathilda bridge widenings, weather permitting.

 Look Ahead:

Demolition of the concrete barrier adjacent to Caltrain Sunnyvale Station has been postponed until February.

Weekly Mathilda Bridge Update - 12/9/10

This Week:

  • Construction continues on the retaining wall west of the southbound lane of Mathilda near the fire station (Wall 3).
  • Installation of temporary structural supports (falsework) continues for the northbound (east side) and southbound (west side) Mathilda bridge widenings.
  • Demolition of the concrete barrier adjacent to San Andreas Court continues, if weather allows.
  • Pile Driving was postponed, as necessary to coordinate with Caltrain. (See below.)
  • Demolition of concrete barriers adjacent to the Caltrain Sunnyvale Station and South Mathilda Way was postponed, to coordinate with Caltrain. (See below.)

Look Ahead:

  • Pile driving is scheduled for December 13, 14 and 15 to complete the remaining two pile driving locations at the bridge west-side, between Evelyn Avenue and the Caltrain tracks, (4W Left and 4W Right). Public notices indicating the new pile driving dates will be distributed.
  • Detour of Evelyn Avenue: Within four to six weeks, Evelyn Avenue will be temporarily closed during working hours for one day. Evelyn will be reopened for traffic by 5 p.m. The closure will allow for the installation of beams across Evelyn Avenue. These beams will support construction of the new Evelyn off-ramp structure. During the closure local detours will be established in each direction of travel to direct traffic around the area. Access to properties will not be affected.
  • Demolition of the concrete barrier adjacent to Caltrain Sunnyvale Station begins on December 13, if weather allows.
  • Demolition of the concrete barrier adjacent to South Mathilda Way begins on December 13, if weather allows.

Good Neighbor Program/Communication:

  • The next public meeting is scheduled for December 9, in the City Hall West Conference Room at 6:30 p.m.

Environmental Compliance: The summary table of all project environmental mitigations is reviewed monthly and in compliance.

Budget: The project is within budget.

Schedule: The project is on schedule.

Caltrans: No issues at this time.

Caltrain / PCJPB:

  • PCJPB Personnel continue to monitor work above or near train tracks. When in the railroad vicinity, project staff is in communication with the railroad flaggers.
  • Caltrain has been notified that the Sunnyvale parking lot will have reduced parking spaces starting December 13. Changeable message boards within the parking lot will be updated to notify patrons.

PG and E: The lowering of an existing PG&E electrical vault is sequenced to be completed after the demolition of the existing Evelyn off ramp.

Project Schedule
The project began in March 2010 and is scheduled to be complete in January 2012.
