It’s been feast or famine for the Cupertino girls soccer team so far this season. In the four matches they have split to begin the 2014-15 campaign, the Pioneers have outscored their opponents 12-2 in their two victories and been outscored 9-1 in their two losses.

Cupertino opened last week with a 7-1 dismantling of the Lincoln Lions, but three days later the Pioneers were dismantled themselves 7-0 by the Willow Glen Rams.

Against Lincoln, senior Stephanie Magellan was a one-girl wrecking crew, shredding the nets with five goals. She also assisted on two scores by sophomores Serena Kutney and Nicole Caballero.

Magellan, who scored three times in the Pioneers’ 5-1 win over Westmont, now has eight goals and three assists on the young season.

In other girls action, Homestead nipped Branham 2-1 last Friday after falling to Santa Teresa 4-0.

The Monta Vista Matadors were involved in three shutouts last week, winning two of them.

The Mats opened the week by blanking The King’s Academy 1-0 and Overfelt 4-0, but then wound up being whitewashed themselves 3-0 last Friday by Leigh.

Alissa Paterson’s second-half goal off a pass from Janaye Sakkas was the deciding factor in the win over King’s, thanks in large part to the 10 saves recorded by Matador goaltender Monica Polgar.

Gopalkrishran Kalpana and Paterson each scored twice to lead Monta Vista past Overfelt. Sakkas assisted on two of the goals, and Nina Biondi and Zegter Hunts Allegra each had assists.

Lynbrook rallied for two second-half scores, but fell one goal short in a 3-2 loss to Prospect. Rachel Tatley and Kristen Wong accounted for the two Viking goals.

In boys games, King’s ran its record to 4-0 with three convincing wins last week as the Knights thumped Scotts Valley 4-1, KIPP Collegiate 5-1 and Saratoga 7-0.

The Knights have now outscored their opponents 18-2.

Against Scotts Valley, Rory McMahon scored two goals and Gabe Costelo and Paul Majchrowicz each chipped in with one.

Sophomore Brian Field’s two-goal performance paced the Knights past KIPP Collegiate. Caleb Howe, Mason Derendinger and Majchrowicz contributed one score each. Emilio Gallegos and McMahon both recorded two assists, while Kyle Huang and Isaiah DeDios each registered one.

In the rout of Saratoga, Field led the Knight onslaught with a pair of goals, and Alex Bae, Parker Andrews, Ben Tinklenbert, Costelo and McMahon each added one. Earning assists were Derendinger, McMahon, Andrews, DeDios, Daniel Howe and Jake Ostman.

After four straight losses to start the season, Lynbrook broke into the win column last Saturday with an impressive 5-2 triumph over Woodside Priory.

Sophomore Ryan King scored three goals and assisted on a fourth to spark the Vikes to their initial win of the year. Two other sophomores, Yutsa Tsumori and Trevor Aquino, tallied Lynbrook’s other two goals.
