ANIMAL MUNICIPAL CODES

All City of Sunnyvale Ordinances can be found online on the City's Municpal Code website. A summary of the most frequently referenced City Ordinances related to animals are listed below.

LEASH REQUIRED

SMC 6.16.010. Dogs must be kept on a leash, not to exceed 6 feet in length, at all times. It is unlawful for any person to allow their dog to stray or run at large in public.

KEEPING UNLICENSED DOGS

SMC 6.12.080. Dogs residing within the City must have a current pet license.

DOGS-RABIES VACCINATION REQUIRED

SMC 6.08.100. Dogs over four months of age must maintain current vaccinations against rabies.

PERMIT-REQUIRED

SMC 6.20.010. Limitations are placed on the number of dogs or cats that may be kept in a residential area. In Sunnyvale , the legal limit is 3 dogs or cats or any combination of both not to exceed 3 total animals.

NUISANCES BY ANIMALS

SMC 6.16.015. All premises where dogs or cats are kept must be kept clean and sanitary. Owners must clean up after their pets. Animals must also not create a noise nuisance.

DUTY TO REPORT ANIMAL BITES

SMC 6.16.040. All animal bites must be immediately reported to the Department of Public Safety at (408) 730-7100, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
