ANTIOCH (BCN)

Police have identified a 34-year-old man who was shot by a police officer while he attempted to evade detainment in Antioch this morning.

At about 8:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 4100 block of Folsom Drive regarding a rifle found in the street, according to police.

Police said in a statement that an officer arriving on the scene "eventually had an encounter" with a man, later identified as Antioch resident Timothy Sean Randolph, and attempted to detain him.

Randolph fled from the officer and headed into an open garage, according to police.

The shooting occurred at about 8:50 a.m. at a home in that same block, said Fire Marshal Robert Marshall of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

Police said the officer tried to detain the suspect and "at some point" opened fire, striking Randolph several times.

The man was taken to John Muir Medical Center via helicopter with gunshot wounds, according to officers.

Police said tonight that Randolph was responsive at the scene and was undergoing treatment at the hospital. He is expected to survive his injuries, police said.

The officer who shot Randolph is a police veteran and was uninjured during the incident, according to police.

The involved officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is routine following investigations of this nature, police said.

Police said the shooting is being jointly investigated by Antioch police, the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office and the county Crime Lab, following standard protocol in an officer-involved shooting.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Antioch police at (925) 779-6988.
